I’m Dr. Sophia Rahman and my journey into the world of medicine has been a lifelong dream. Growing up in a small town in Gainesville, TX, I watched my father, Dr. Pervaiz Rahman, devote his heart and soul to patient care. As “daddy’s little girl,” I aspired to follow in his footsteps. My academic journey began at Lindsay High School, where I had the honor of graduating at the top of my class.
During my college years at Southern Methodist University (SMU), I faced skepticism from advisors and peers who doubted my dream of becoming a doctor. They questioned the viability of attending medical school in the Caribbean, an unconventional path at the time. Inspired by my brother’s words, “When we climb mountains, does it matter how we get to the top?” I enrolled at St. Matthews University in the Cayman Islands. The journey was challenging, with two years of intense classroom education followed by two years of clinical rotations in different cities. Despite doubts, my parents’ unwavering support propelled me forward. Upon completing my medical education, I navigated Texas’ stringent licensure requirements, passing the American Board of Internal Medicine examination in August 2013. This journey reflects my determination to pursue a medical career and my commitment to providing high-quality healthcare.
After completing my residency, I joined the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Oklahoma, where I worked with patients facing stage IV cancer diagnoses. Many were seeking hope when all other options had run out. This experience reminded me of my journey to becoming a physician. I later served as a hospitalist in Richardson, Texas, and transitioned to outpatient primary care, aiming to establish enduring patient relationships. I gained valuable experience working at the VA and various medical centers before venturing into private practice. While private practice may be less financially rewarding, it allows me to prioritize patient care above all else. My patient-centric approach has been the foundation of my medical career, reflecting my unwavering dedication to patients and the field of medicine. Establishing Sophia Rahman MD PLLC underscores my commitment to providing personalized care and fostering trusting patient relationships.
